Projection marking is used to provide an outline of objects, components, or scales on a surface without making physical contact with the surface. In this way, the laser projection can be changed almost instantly and with high accuracy. Laser projections have been successfully implemented to project shapes corresponding to inventory or jigging. This helps in the repeated and exact placement of construction and assembly parts in a factory or warehouse. They have also been used in transport to project road or railway markings that can change according to traffic levels.

The key benefit of lasers in this application is that they are highly visible in almost all ambient lighting conditions, and the most appropriate wavelength can be chosen to increase the visibility on a specific material. As a result, laser sources can also be positioned outside of the working area to reduce hazardous clutter.
